Honey Mushroom (Edible) - Armillaria mellea
I went off-trail today at Riverwood and into the 'Wildwood." This is the one time of year when it's possible to walk through here. In the Spring it's flooded, and toward the end of that season the black-flies swarm relentlessly. During the Summer the underbrush is high, and the mosquitoes are an abomination--joined quickly by biting deer flies. But in the Fall, ah bliss. The biting bugs have finished for the year. The water table is low enough that it's completely walkable And today I was rewarded by a find of about 10 or so clusters of Honey Mushroom like this. The whole mushroom community really appreciated the rain we've had recently.
