snapping turtle

This mamma snapper has just laid a clutch of about 40 eggs over a period of several hours after finding a suitable spot on the gravel driveway to dig the nest. Notice the soft belly and the hard shell. Also the serrated tail. She looks and walks like a dinosaur and shrinks down on her belly to protect her soft undercarriage when she feels threatened. If you look closely, you will see a mosquito has landed on her nose, lol. Mosquitoes have no respect! -- Riverwood -- North Kawartha
